In an attempt to schedule a primary candidates’ forum for Carolyn McCarthy’s seat in the 4th U.S. congressional district, the League of Women Voters of Nassau County invited the two Republican and the two Democratic candidates to a Candidates’ Night event on Monday, June 16th, at Molloy College. This event has been canceled because only one Republican candidate, Frank Scaturro, and one Democrat candidate, Kevan Abrahams, agreed to attend. Their opponents, Republican Bruce Blakeman and Kathleen Rice, Democrat, have declined. According to League bylaws, at least two members of each party must appear in order to host such an event.
“We were hoping to have commitments from all four contenders and we are very disappointed,” League co-president Jane Thomas said. She commented on the need for the voting public to be kept informed at large events such as this, especially in light of the importance of a U.S. Congressional seat.
The League has already scheduled a candidate forum for Tuesday, October 14th at Hofstra University for the winners of the June 24th primary.Thomas commented, “Our hope is that the candidates will allow the public this opportunity to hear their views at this event.”
The League of Women Voters does not support or oppose any political party or candidate but urges all Nassau County registered voters to vote in the primary on Tuesday, June 24th.
