The Threat to Voting Rights: A League of Women Voters Port Washington-Manhasset Program

‘You Have the Right to Vote, Don’t You?’ is the subject of at Oct. 20 discussion at the Manhasset Library.

What has been happening to voter access and to voting rights across the country? This will be the focus of a program, titled “You Have the Right to Vote, Don’t You?,” sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset. The public is invited to bring questions and join this timely discussion at the Manhasset Library on Monday, October 20, at 7 pm.

The featured speaker will be Vishal Agraharkar, JD, Counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program at New York University School of Law. Mr. Agraharkar is a graduate of Williams College and Columbia Law School. Since joining the Brennan Center, his work has focused on voting rights and elections. Several of his papers on the topic can be accessed here.

Mr. Agraharkar will discuss new voting restrictions enacted in some states over the past few years – including photo ID requirements, registration limitations, and reduced voting times. He will review major lawsuits over these restrictions that could affect this year’s elections and recommend actions that individuals can take to protect the right to vote at both national and local levels.
