The League Of Women Voters Evolves

Do you believe in the right to vote? If so, the League of Women Voters (LWV) has made major changes to its organization which opens up myriad opportunities for all. The age requirement for membership in the LWV of Port Washington-Manhasset has been lowered to 16 years from 18 years. The League of Women Voters wants everyone to have a voice so one need not be a U.S. citizen to participate as a full member. These changes were made by LWVUS, the national branch, at its recent convention from June 16 to 19 in Washington, DC.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages citizens to participate in government and to influence policy through education and study. One focus of the LWV is increased voter turnout, especially significant in this election year. In 2012, New York State ranked 44th in voter turnout, meaning only about 53 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot.

This is a good time to get involved and make a difference.

The LWV Port Washington-Manhasset includes men and women who live in East Williston, Glen Cove, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Manhasset, North Hills, Port Washington, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor, Roslyn Heights, Sea Cliff, and Williston Park. The membership fee is $50 and additional family members can join for $25. After joining the league you automatically become a member of national, county, and state leagues.

Their website contains extensive voter information, such as deadlines for absentee ballots in the upcoming primaries and general election, so visit the website at www.lwvcentralnassau.org. For more information about LWV, call 516-883-0011 or email jhcarch@aol.com.
