On Monday, March 27, 2023, LWV Central Nassau participated in a private tour of Raynham Hall, a historical site in Oyster Bay, where we were introduced to the Townsend family from before the Revolutionary War.
The family history included the story of Liss, an enslaved girl through events during the war as well as her personal journey to freedom. We toured the newly established museum and the home across the way to learn stories of how the family lived in the home over the generations. Our tour guide JoAnn was informative and enlightening. Afterwards, we enjoyed a delightful lunch together in a local eatery.
We highly recommend the site as an engaging afternoon of local Nassau County history.
