Happy New Year, League Leaders!
On Tuesday, the White House made their boldest commitment to voting rights to date — calling for the passage of voting rights legislation by ending the Senate filibuster rule. This is the result of months of pressure, thousands of phone calls and letters, multiple protests at the White House, and hundreds of arrests. I am proud to see the impact of our work.
Following the White House’s commitment to securing voting rights, Congress responded by introducing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. This morning the new superbill was passed by the House, bringing the voting rights legislation to the Senate yet again. The League will continue our pressure on the US Senate and the Biden Administration to get federal voting rights legislation across the finish line. Now is more important than ever to drive your members and supporters to contact their senators about this bill. Use our newest action alert and share the coalition call-in number: 1.833.345.2551. The Senate needs to feel our greatest pressure yet.
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we are joining the King family and partners for #DeliverForVotingRights action. We are excited to see how Leagues will be showing up with partners for this action. We encourage Leagues to continue using the social media toolkit created by our partners. This toolkit may include partisan language; therefore, Leagues should use their best discernment when sharing partner content and/or tweak posts with partisan language.
Next month we will be celebrating our 102nd birthday with action, advocacy, and storytelling. Women have powered democracy for over 100 years, and for our birthday we are coming together across the country to build power for elections in 2022. We will honor the 102-year legacy of our organization with a day of unified, pro-voter action as one League, together.
Celebrate the League’s legacy by joining Leagues across the country for LWV Birthday Action on Feb. 14, 2022. Sign your League up to take action using this form. More resources are to come.
Thank you all for your work to protect our freedom to vote! This has been a long and ongoing fight, but it is these moments that remind us that our work is not in vain. Keep pushing forward. Wear your mask. Stay safe.
In League,
