Buffalo
The Buffalo Niagara League’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI) hosted Pulling the Race Card, an interactive exercise aimed to help communities have effective and open conversations about race.
The League was joined by their partner, including the NAACP, Self-Advocacy of New York State (SANYS), Westminster Presbyterian Church, National Action Network and the Jewish Community Relations Council. The creators of The Race Card, Sarah Pearson-Collins and her sister, Kezia Collins, facilitated the challenging and lively discussions about race. The post-event feedback from the diverse group of participants was very positive.
The Buffalo Niagara League received a $1,000 grant from Niagara Councilman David Rivera to help with expenses for this and other DEI efforts. Both Councilman Rivera and Councilman Mitch Nowakowski attended and participated actively in the discussions.
Broome-Tioga
Binghamton University was recently recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) as one of its 2022 ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting. Campuses that join the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge complete a set of action items to institutionalize nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation on their campus.
The Broome-Tioga League is an active presence on the SUNY Binghamton campus, and has collaborated with the University on candidate forums, voter registration drives, and other civic-education initiatives. Alison Twang, the interim director at the Center for Civic Engagement, is also the Broome-Tioga League’s Director-at-Large. Congratulations on this spectacular achievement!
Albany County
On November 17th, the Albany County League celebrated their 100th anniversary by hosting a gala at Congregation Beth Emeth. Speakers included League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Turner, who delivered an inspiring message to attendees, and Melissa Hale-Spencer of the Altamont Enterprise. Included in the festivities was the recognition of sixteen “Life Members” who have been members of the Albany County League for fifty years or longer. The Albany County’s work for voters and democracy was recognized in proclamations received from the U.S. House and Senate, New York State Assembly and Senate, Albany County, and the City of Watervliet.
Utica-Rome
The Oneida County History Center recently inducted its Hall of Fame class of 2022. Among the 5 individuals recognized was former Utica-Rome League member Beatrice “Bea” DeSantis (1900 – 1991). Members of the Utica-Rome League attended the ceremony honoring Bea and the other inductees.
who achieved prominence that reflects credit upon our community and made contributions that improved life in Oneida County or enhanced the cultural and social value of the region.
Rochester Metro Area
In order to receive a clearer understanding of the 2022 election, the Rochester Metro League recently hosted an educational event titled “What Do the Election Results Mean?” The League was joined by Dr. Timothy Kneeland, Professor and Chair of the History, Politics, and Law Department at Nazareth College. Dr. Kneeland broke down the results of the 2022 general election and the political trends in Monroe County, New York State, and the United States.
Scarsdale
This fall, members of the Scarsdale League jumped into action to educate students at Scarsdale Middle School in civics education. With help from League members, SMS parents and teachers, the 8th grade classrooms participated in an engaging game of Civics Jeopardy. Questions ranged from Electoral College information to presidential trivia and Constitutional Amendment details.
Along with the Jeopardy game, League volunteers staffed tables where students from grades 6th through 8th checked-in to vote on computers at “polling booths”. Each student received an “I Voted Today” sticker to mark their participation at the polls.
Huntington
Representatives from the Huntington League met with the Brentwood High School Government Club to present Certificates of Appreciation for Civic Engagement to 7 students. As part of the LWV Huntington 2022 Get Out the Vote effort targeted to the Youth demographic, the honored students participated in creating Social Media videos to inform their youth peers about early voting as part of the LWV Huntington 2022 Get Out the Vote effort targeted to the Youth demographic.
The winning video was created and directed by Brian Delgado and involved several other club participants. All the students involved decided to donate the $100.00 prize back to the government club to continue their civic work. See more of the great work of LWV of Huntington by clicking here.
